Angus Konstam's Edinburgh Wargames
REVIEWS
____________________
I've been talked into adding this new section, containing reviews of figures, terrain and rules, as these might be of interest to people. Some of them will be reviewed by me, others by my friends, but they'll be from the heart - they won't be influenced by a need to keep anyone happy, to massage egos or to pan something just for the sake of it. In other words we'll try to be as objective as we can, giving you our opinion of the product.
This section kicks off with a review of the Napoleon rules from Wargames Foundry, Republic to Empire by the League of Augsburg and Black Powder by Warlord Games.
We plan to follow with further reviews of Battlegroup Panzer Grenadier - 2nd Edition (Caliver Books), General Quarters - 3rd Edition and possibly Lasalle. As my gaming buddies are continually accusing me of never reading rules, I'll try to ask others to review them for me. These guys actually enjoy reading wargame rules, and worse - they remember them. That means they can quote some irritating little clause in mid-game, just when my troops are poised to sweep all before them. It doesn't make them bad people - just wargamers who play by the rules...
There's another reason I prefer these guys to write the rule reviews. It saves me getting it in the neck from the writers. For example, I regard Barry Hilton as a wargaming buddy. So too is Dave Brown, whose General de Brigade is the closest competitor to Barry's Republic to Empire. Getting someone else to do the deed reduces the risk of being caught in the middle! However, I'll certainly add links to games we've played using them, and I'll probably be unable to resist commenting on them in the Journal...
