Naval Periods
As a former naval officer (a long long time ago now), and a keen naval historian, it was inevitable that I would dip my toe in the water. I've tried most naval periods over the years, but I found I wasn't gaming them very much - at least compared to land games. Therefore I've slimmed them down to four periods, each of which has its own particular charm. These only come out about once a quarter, and we usually use them as "filler games", when nobody has anythign planned, or we need to substitute a game at short notice. However, we always enjoy ourselves, and a bit of fresh sea air usually does us the world of good...
Of these four periods two are essentially part of the "ironclad era", and the other two are WW2. However, 1/600 ACW Naval is a very different type of game from a 1/1000 Pre-Dreadnought one, which is really about fleet actions. Similarly, while my 1/2400 Pacific War fleets slug it out around Guadalcanal, the 1/600 Coastal Forces games are scrappy, hard-fought affairs, where a side either wins or loses spectacularly!
These sections also contain pictures of our new sea mat, a great-looking and vital part of any naval game. At the risk of sounding like a marketing type I have to say I looked for convincing sea terrain for years, until I came across this product . Here's the supplier - he really deserves the built-in link www.terrainmat.com
I've also provided a page about the Mike Earll Collection of superb scratch-built 1:1200 scale ships which is currently up for sale.
